Morning blood sugar after an overnight fast. Can stay normal for years even as insulin resistance progresses.

Reference range: 3.9 to 5.4 mmol/L

Fasting Insulin
Blood (SST)

The pancreatic output required to keep glucose in range. The earliest signal of metabolic dysfunction. Rarely tested by GPs.

Reference range: Under 10 mIU/L ideal, under 5 optimal

HOMA-IR
Calculated from glucose and insulin

Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance. A single number that captures how efficiently your body is using insulin.

Reference range: Under 1.0 optimal, above 2.0 insulin resistant
