Product Education:
Berberis aristata is a deciduous evergreen herb indigenous to subtropical climates including India, Nepal, Asia and South America that has been used medicinally since ancient times in Ayurvedic and Chinese paradigms. Berberis aristata is considered to be one of the most medicinally significant herbs within the Berberis genus due to its broad therapeutic actions, mainly attributed to the alkaloid berberine. Within these traditional paradigms, such medicinal uses included as an antioxidant, blood sugar balancer, lipometabolic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and digestive supporting agent.
Evail™ Technology
Harnessing berberine’s therapeutic potential requires optimal absorption and delivery of a component that usually has suboptimal oral bioavailability due to enterocyte P-glycoproteins limiting its intestinal absorption. The Designs for Health Evail™ Process is specifically formulated to enhanced absorption of difficult to absorb ingredients such as berberine. It is manufactured using the Designs for Health Evail™ technology, which is an all-natural formulation that improves absorption and delivery. This process uses a proprietary blend of sustainable MCT oils, non-soy derived sunflower lecithin, and gamma tocopherol vitamin E, without the use of potentially harmful surfactants.
Antioxidant
Berberine has demonstrated antioxidant properties. Specifically, berberine reduces oxidative stress via significant superoxide and hydroxyl scavenging activity and by enhancing endogenous antioxidant system levels and activity (i.e. glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase).
Cardiovascular system health
Experimental and clinical evidence has shown berberine to have cardio-supportive and lipid metabolic-modulating effects. It helps to maintain cardiovascular system health, healthy blood lipids and cholesterol levels (particularly total cholesterol, low- and high-density lipoproteins and triglycerides) via several mechanisms. These include upregulating hepatic low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) mRNA expression and protein levels, inhibiting lipogenesis and cellular lipid accumulation.
Blood glucose levels
The long traditional use of berberine for maintaining blood sugar in Ayurvedic and Chinese paradigms has been validated by current clinical evidence demonstrating its effects on glucose metabolism involving insulin-mimetic and- independent mechanisms. In particular, along with its antioxidant mechanisms, berberine helps support healthy blood glucose levels by stimulating glycolysis, activating glucokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and the AMP-activated protein-kinase pathway, modulating insulin receptor activity, promoting insulin sensitization and muscle glucose uptake and beneficially modulating the gastrointestinal microbiome.
Antiviral activity of berberine
Studies have show it has the ability to inhibit infection of various viruses including influenza virus, HSV, HCMV and CHIKV, and to reduce virus production. Many viruses can target the MAPK pathway to manipulate cellular functions and control viral replication, leading to host cell death. These pathways are also involved in inhibitory effect of berberine. In addition, it can inhibit inflammatory responses triggered by viruses.
Studies have found it reduces virus replication and targets specific interactions between the virus and its host. It intercalates into DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis and reverse transcriptase activity. It inhibits replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This isoquinoline alkaloid has the ability to regulate the MEK-ERK, AMPK/mTOR, and NF-κB signaling pathways, which are necessary for viral replication. Furthermore, it has been reported that berberine supports the host immune response, thus leading to viral clearance.
